TL;DR:
  • What It Is: A lightweight hair oil made with nourishing coconut oil and shorea butter
  • What It Does: Hydrates hair without added weight, protects against heat damage, and smoothes away frizz
  • Who It's For: All hair types, but especially curly hair types

Even though I've pretty much nailed both my curly and straight hairstyling cocktails, I'm constantly trying new hair products. Much like my skin, my hair goes through phases of being dry and oily, so finding a go-to product that appeases both hair moods has been an ongoing task. That is until I tried the Allure Best of Beauty-winning Kérastase Discipline Oléo-Relax Advanced Control-in-Motion Oil. Unlike many of the stylers relinquished to the product graveyard I've created, this one actually works no matter the style.

I change my style up based on the weather, which means that I go curly in the summer via wash-and-goes and twist-outs when humidity doesn't get along with a fresh blowout. And in the winter, when I don't want to step outside with wet hair, I almost exclusively wear my hair straight. Both styles require a happy medium of moisture. Although my hair is naturally curly, in the 3C-4A range, it's also dense, highly porous, and fine, so it can get weighed down pretty easily.

I can tell just by looking at a product's consistency how well it will work on my hair. Generally, I steer clear of heavy oils for the reason stated above, but that isn't an issue with Oléo-Relax. The moisturizing shorea butter and virgin coconut oil in the elixir are light enough to layer over or under my other styling products since I typically follow the leave-in, curl cream, oil (LCO) method when applying my products. I can also use it on day-two-or-three curls to soften, reshape, and smooth any frizziness that has formed. When I do this, I can usually get a day or two more out of my wash-and-go.

When I wear my hair straight, if it feels dry before I blow it out, I dab a single pump of Oléo-Relax onto my damp hair before I add heat. It hydrates and protects my hair from scorching and general dry-out that can come from heat-styling too often. After I finish styling, I do a really light glaze on top with the serum to again smooth down any stray ends.

Oléo-Relax is truly the moisturizer, smoother, and heat-protecting product that keeps my curls and blowout perfectly balanced.
